Characters There are currently 3 characters in Blade Symphony, each with their own unique fighting style, and each with 3 different fighting stances with their own attack animations, damage amounts, and attack speeds.
Judgement Judgement is the "knight" style character, he is slightly slower and has more basic combos, but he's sturdy and his attacks are powerful. In each stance, Judgement has 3 combo points. Phalanx Phalanx is a "fencer" style character, he's quick at closing distances, and his attacks consist of thrusts and quick swipes. Ryoku Ryoku is a "breakdancer" style character, he's extremely quick and aggressive, focused on scoring multi-hit combos. Pure Pure is a "wushu" style character, she is currently in development and not yet implemented in the game.
Swords There are currently five different sword types to choose from, each with it's own offensive and defensive properties. Longswords Longswords have low base damage, and lower damage from Fast and Air stances, but they will do double damage after a successful parry.
Katanas Katanas are the "starter" sword type, good all around damage and hit rate, they do slightly more damage when attacking from the side. Jians Jians recover from attacking faster than other sword types, and get a bonus to knockback attacks and more damage on aerial hits. Foils Foils are a low base damage sword that gets big bonuses from doing stabbing and thrusting attacks, it's also great for parrying, as it will turn your opponent, and recover faster after parrying.
Scimitars Scimitars are weak swords made for scoring multiple hits. Edge praised the depth of gameplay, believing the game deep and original enough "to stand up as a competitive game in its own right".
Reviewing the game at GameSpot, Nathan Meunier noted how this depth was neatly contained in a streamlined control scheme, allowing players to "unleash a wide range of unique dizzying assaults" with "no shortage of variety in killer moves".
Will Uhl, in his review at PC Gamer, instead found the depth shining through in the gaps between the action, where players stand off in the tense "psychological war of baiting, reacting, and examining the opponent" before the engagement. Reviews spoke highly of the player community. Uhl noted how the "sense of honor" between players was unheard of in other games.
Meunier described the community as a "dedicated and intriguing bunch", whose unpredictable and unusual strategies could lead to "plenty of humorous and interesting fights"; their "cordial and polite" nature comparing favourably to other multiplayer communities. Facedown other players in tactical swordplay, 2 versus 2 team duels, sandbox FFA, or the Control Points game mode!

All unlockables are cosmetic. You care about proving your skill and so should your game. Every attack has openings that are determined in real-time and efficacy is entirely up to you. Did you start an attack too early? Turn away and end the attack in a safe location. Did your opponent stupidly use a lighter stance? Go in and punish him!
By switching stances mid-combo you can chain attacks into your own flurry of death. The fighting system is open for your exploration, you can dash, jump, do an air attack, land, swing sideways with a heavy stance, parry with a light stance, and then roll away. Every attack flows from your blade in true three-dimensional space.
As do your opponents! Swords collide in mid-air and you will need good timing and aim to defeat your opponent. Advanced Character Customization Customize your character with skins, masks, swords, and multiple attachments streamed directly from Steam Workshop.
