Distributing Apps on Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager All apps on the App Store are automatically available for volume purchase for the same price in Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager, which is where businesses and educational institutions download apps for volume distribution. Content may include apps, books, and custom apps. Location tokens are used to assign and manage licenses purchased using Apple Business Manager.

If the assignment type is available for enrolled devices, available app updates can also be installed from the Company Portal by selecting the Update action on the app details page.

Apps cannot migrate from device to user licenses for any assignment type. Company Portal does not show device-licensed apps on User Enrollment devices because only user-licensed apps can be installed on User Enrollment devices.

Existing assignments remain unchanged. If your organization has not migrated to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager yet, review Apple's guidance on migrating to Apps and Books before proceeding to manage purchased apps in Intune. Automatic app updates - Choose from Yes or No to enable automatic updates.

When enabled, Intune detects the VPP app updates inside the app store and automatically pushes them to the device when the device checks in. For apps deployed with Available install intent, the automatic update generates a status message for the IT admin informing that a new version of the app is available.

This status message is viewable by selecting the app, selecting Device Install Status, and checking the Status Details. I grant Microsoft permission to send both user and device information to Apple.

You can synchronize the app names, metadata and license information for your purchased apps in Intune by choosing Sync for a selected token. On the list of apps pane, choose the app you want to assign, and then choose Properties. Select Edit next to Assignments. On the Assignments tab, choose whether the app will be Required or Available for enrolled devices. Hopefully these help, please feel free to ask if anything's not clear, and I'll update this if I find anything else on the company portal issue.

I have a ticket open with MS regarding the Company Portal deployed during ADE-enrollment to see if that version is supposed to update itself. So far they have not stated whether it should or should not behave that way. Without it being pushed as a VPP, required app, the out-dated Company Portal will prompt the user to Update, which will bring them to the regular App Store, but it won't let them install that one and will provide the error "Cannot Update App.

Intune Company Portal cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID". In our scenario, Company Portal isn't used regularly by the user base some may have never even opened it after the initial enrollment. So we've observed that the versions of the Company Portal appear to still be on the version that was installed during initially enrollment.

It could be that under normal circumstances and regular usage, if the Company Portal is periodically opened, it will be within the supported version range that it will update itself. I have no proof of that though, just speculation. To remedy this issue, simply deploy the VPP version of the Company portal to the devices using Device licensing in the assignment. Doing so allows Endpoint to take over update control and will force the Company portal application to update to the latest version on the devices.

Checking the Monitor logs, we cannot see any good error codes that we could troubleshoot further. But the Enrollment Page failures are increasing with devices. As some users start to factory reset the devices for the second time, suddenly Company Portal is downloading to the device.

Without seeing any errors in Intune we create a ticket with Microsoft providing them with details. But looking into the docs, I can see more details about how Intune creates a shadow dynamic group that we never seen in Azure Ad groups. I just quote interesting documentation below:.

The part about DEP did not reflect our environment, but the process gives some information about the logical part of the assignment. As we did not have much choice to wait for any solution we just had to continue our workaround enroll the iOS device for the second time so that the Device could get the CP.
